The best laid plans. We thought we’d drive through the mountains to get to Oatman but at a certain point the route was flooded. It was touch and go whether we could get through the water. We looked at some 4x4’s driving through, but there’s such low clearance on our car we didn’t want to risk it so turned round and just joined the Interstate instead.
By re-joining the Interstate we disappointingly missed Essex in California. When we got to Goffs we decided to join Route 66 and travel back to Roy’s Cafe in Amboy, California. It was about an hour’s divert but seemed as though it was worth it.
After doubling back towards Goffs and staying on Route 66 drove to the Bagdad Cafe. The owner seemed to be confused and I fear she may have dementia. We figured we’d buy some cherry cola since there was some behind the counter. She went away to try and find some and came back out of the backroom saying; “here is some” and there was nothing in her hand. It was a sad state of affairs. I hope she’s okay.
The opening to Hunter S Thompson’s “Fear and loathing in Las Vegas” is; “We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”
And with that we pulled up the Route 66 Motel in Barstow for the night.
